Pavlov backs plan to increase penalties for fleeing police
RELEASE|October 28, 2025

Rep. Pavlov: “Protecting the public must come first.”

State Rep. Joseph Pavlov last week voted in favor of legislation that strengthens penalties for fleeing and eluding police, ensuring greater accountability for those who endanger lives by refusing to stop for law enforcement.

Pavlov, R-Smiths Creek, co-sponsored and voted for House Bills 4690 and 4691, which increase criminal penalties for drivers who flee police officers during traffic stops or pursuits. Several recent tragedies from chases all across the state have underscored the need for tougher laws.

“When someone runs from the police, they’re putting lives at risk, and not just the officers’ lives or their own. They also endanger innocent people on the road,” Pavlov said. “This legislation sends a clear message: reckless disregard for public safety will not be tolerated. I want to give people every reason to stop and avoid putting innocent families at risk.”

Pavlov said the measure reflects the Legislature’s ongoing commitment to supporting law enforcement officers and keeping Michigan communities safe, following significant investments in public safety and local policing in the recent state budget. The bills now move to the state Senate for further consideration.
